Nanaimo Downtown Design and Planning Guidelines recognized by the RAIC

April 22, 2014

By: Louise Turch

Once again, Nanaimo has been recognized for its positive actions. The Regional Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has recognized Nanaimo’s Downtown Urban Design Manual and Guidelines by D’Ambrosio Architecture + Urbanism as the winner this year for the Small or Medium Community Urban Design Award.

The Guidelines are acknowledged for the ability to demonstrate how a broad range of community sizes can benefit from the placement of urban planning.

Jury Comments:

“This Plan clearly demonstrates the validity for small communities to undertake a major urban planning exercise. It is not only large cities that can benefit from urban design thinking but communities of all sizes. This document provides clear direction not only for future private development, but also for the whole range of interventions within the public realm that in the long run will dramatically increase the quality of urban life in Nanaimo.”1
